C-THINK TROUBLED BY CONDITIONS AT JUNIOR LEAGUE LEADERS HOLLAND PRIMARY
KINGSTON, Jamaica: Chairman of the C-Think Global Commission, Dr. Claudette Morris, has expressed deep concern about conditions at Holland Primary School in St. Elizabeth, where some students are being taught outdoors under trees and a bamboo structure as the school continues to recover from damage associated with Hurricane Melissa.
The circumstances are particularly troubling for C-Think because Holland Primary currently leads the C-Think Jamaica Junior League.
In Jamaica, C-Think is adjudicated by The Mico University College, with 20 primary and 20 high schools participating in its Junior and Youth leagues. The programme uses competitive debates, media, leadership activities and community projects to develop critical thinking, communication and leadership among young people.
“These children are showing up, thinking, competing and excelling despite very difficult circumstances,” Dr. Morris said. “We cannot celebrate Holland Primary for leading our Junior League and then look away when its children need help.”
C-Think said it will write to the Member of Parliament for the constituency and will also mobilise its Community Impact Network, a growing network of businesses and other community partners that host C-Think collection points and support education, youth development and community initiatives.
As an immediate demonstration of that commitment, C-Think will dedicate 25% of the funds it receives from the Community Impact Network at the first opening of its collection tins, to a collaborative effort to assist with the rehabilitation of Holland Primary School.
“Community impact must mean responding when one of our own schools is in need,” Dr. Morris said. “We want our businesses, partners and the wider public to join us in helping Holland Primary provide its children with the learning environment they deserve.”
C-Think is therefore appealing to corporate Jamaica, past students, community organisations and other partners to participate in a coordinated effort to support the school.
